Vinha de bicicleta e passei pela Mayersche. Lembrei-me de perguntar se ja sabiam quem tinha ganho o prémio Nobel da literatura e aí me comunicaram que tinha ganho Tomas Tranströmer. Perguntei se tinham algum livro dele e disseram-me que não. Parece que ele só editou três livros nos últimos vinte anos e isso talvez justifique a escassez do stock. Encontrei este video e achei bonito. Quem quiser ler poder seguir por aqui.

Se uma sonda espacial como a Galileu viaja a cerca 45.8 km/s, isso implica que uma sonda enviada hoje, tripulada ou nao, necessitaria de cerca de 125 mil anos até chegar ao planeta Gliese 581G. Talvez a tecnologia dê um pulo e talvez seja possível aproveitar a aceleração de alguns campos gravíticos ou electromagnéticos, mas mesmo assim, é bizarro sequer planear uma missão para durar tanto tempo. Especialmente tendo em conta que o que nos distancia, enquanto espécie, dos macacos são uns meros 50 mil anos. A minha única esperança é, tal como no livro "Contacto" de Carl Sagan, de apanhar uma estação de televisão do Gliese 581G e chegar à conclusão que nem todo o mundo assiste reality shows, ou concursos de talentos infantis.

Fernando Meireles has built top quality instruments played by some of the present best guitar players. He has his workshop at Associação Académica de Coimbra (student's union of the University of Coimbra) and his mobile phone number is +351 917494983.

Gilberto Grácio lives in Cacém and is the descendent of the famous Grácio luthier family. Along with the Paredes players they were responsible for many of the technological developments of the guitar during the XX century. Apart from building his own top quality instruments, Gracio started a guitar building school near Lisbon and the guitars produced there are considered to be of good quality with an intermediate price range. I do not have the contacts from Gracio or the school, but you could get there through the telephone of the local council "Junta de Freguesia de Paços de Arcos" +351 214437793.

Oscar Cardoso is also another important builder living close to Lisbon who recently developed a new guitar without bottom. In the North of Portugal one can also find Alvarinho de Castro Pereira (R. de D.Miguel,1033, S.Cosme, 4420 Gondomar).

In Coimbra, there is still a shop where you can buy a wide range of affordable guitars and it is called "Olimpio Medina" (Praça 8 de Maio nº 28). In the 50s and 60s it was the central point of distribution of the Portuguese guitar in the centre and north of Portugal.

No seguimento do artigo do Público, gostaria de sugerir um livro que poderá ser do interesse dos mais curiosos pela área.

Em "The Singing Neanderthals", Steven Mithen propõe que os Neandertais teriam uma linguagem complexa baseada em sons mais próximos do que conhecemos hoje como vocalizações musicais. Apesar do seu quê de especulativo, como é comum nas as discussões sobre os primórdios da música e da linguagem, o livro está muito bem apoiado em dezenas de referências e estudos nas áreas da biologia, etologia, registo fóssil, biolinguistica e biomusicologia. Estas novas descobertas da genética, darão seguramente novo fôlego a esta discussão.

É sempre com muito interesse que leio os desafios anuais contidos na revista edge.org e agora reportados no PÚBLICO.

Que a internet alterou muita coisa na nossa cultura é indiscutível, mas ainda não alterou o ser humano ao nível mais básico. É antes uma ferramenta tecnológica muito poderosa que poderá ser usada para o bem ou para o mal. O tom da generalidade dos depoimentos não é tão optimista hoje como se ouviria há uns anos atrás mas julgo que o pessimismo é fruto da rapidez a que a mudança se verifica. António Dias Figueiredo disse uma vez numa conferência de tecnologias da informação que "não se pode conduzir uma mota numa estrada muito sinuosa e estar sempre a olhar para o retrovisor - dá em acidente". Parece-me uma boa metáfora.

Preocupa-me obviamente que a censura espreite a cada canto, ou que a Internet se pode revelar uma máquina com propósitos bastante nefastos. Lembro-me também do filme "Brazil" de Terry Gilliam, com o seu horroroso "Ministry of Information Retrieval", não prevendo que haja algum beneficio em tentar definir o que são conteúdos aceitáveis.

Mas deixando de lado cenários futuristas horrendos, a minha perspectiva é que o conhecimento necessita de ser estruturado para o cérebro daí retirar prazer e utilidade. Faz falta que a sociedade ensine as os miúdos e graúdos a usarem a Internet de forma saudável, para poderem saber fazer escolhas. Deveria haver algo como uma disciplina escolar chamada de "gestão da informação e pensamento crítico", que pudesse ensinar a triar informação credível, a actuar de forma social, e também a fazer uma pausa de todos os meios de comunicação, para reflectir sem interrupções externas. Os potenciais benefícios disso, com efeitos no presente, parecem-me enormes.

Gostei muito dos depoimentos de Gerd Gigerenzer, ele que dedicou muito ao estudo da informação e reflexos na tomada de decisão, do Marc Hauser pelo lado humano da interacção, do Steven Pinker pela racionalidade, e do Brian Eno pelo elogio da autenticidade, porque apesar do optimismo latente nos puxam para terra e nos recordam também do que é mais essencial da natureza humana.

Lusco-Fusco is an expression referring to the fantastic light observed during 5 to 7 minutes near the sunset time.

The Lusco-Fusco parties (or Loosk Faske, according to the free English translation provided by the original creators of the concept) are going to happen on a regular basis at the University of Plymouth or in its vicinity. At a more or less unexpected time in a more or less unexpected place a group of people gather to have a very intense 5/7 minutes party during a short break from studies.

Bring your portable radio, with or without headphones, perhaps sunglasses, and come to the first experimental outdoors session between Smeaton Building and Link Building (near the cash points). If you can’t bring your own radio don’t worry, we have some to lend to people.

Last Thursday I got the privilege to watch the two films at the arts centre from the projection room, or the projection box.

Adam is 21 and has been a projectionist for 4 years while he is studying environmental science. He says that he must have seen more than 400 movies; some were even quite rare as he was working at an arts cinema in the place he was born.

The heat and the noise from the two CINEMECCANICA machines didn’t make it really comfortable to watch the movie, but it is a rather magical place. The amount of gadgets and small reels of film with trailers and advertisements that are stored on the shelves bears the atmosphere of a workshop where the projectionist gives the final polish to the piece of art. I laughed just by seeing the commercials from Orange mobile phone in the size and colours of slides.

Being a projectionist is a lonely job, no wonder that Adam talked almost non stop about every little step and functionality that he operated during the screening. You don’t get contact with the public apart from some hand waves at the beginning or at the end of the film, but on an old cinema like the Arts Centre there are a lot of things to do besides keeping track to the automation and memorising the lines of the characters in the movies. The film comes in reels of 20 minutes long and it has to be spliced onto two big reels that will be installed in each of the machines. The comercials, trailers, and each of the pieces of the film, have to be so perfectly spliced to the point of creating a perfect ring when bent. In the meanwhile, Adam explains what to do when changing from Large Screen to Cinemascope, changing the lens and adjusting the frame to fine cut the edges of the film, and shows the tiny sinusiodal lines of the soundtrack on the 35mm film.

I guess the great fun comes when, after the film is set and runing for half way though, one of the big reels finishes and the other has to start running. There is a small black circle that appears for less that half a second at the top right corner of the screen, and five seconds later another comes that gives the signal for the projectionist to switch machines. It is great! You focus your eyes without blinking on the screen, and although the characters keep doing their lives on the stage, you only want to know about the one important corner. Then, Adam makes a swift move and you can the machines doing a lot of noise and until the first reel of film finishes leading the loose end of the film to wave in the air for a couple of seconds. Now it is time to take the reel off and rewind it all way to the beginning, all done by hand!

I saw two films in there. The first, "The Ballad of Jack and Rose", was nice for the photography but the second one was absolutely amazing. “Shooting dogs” is an extremely sad and true story about the genocide in Ruanda. Although I felt quite detached from the experience of watching the movie, as I seemed to be watching the movie of the movie, I could perfectly imagine the shock it would have been to see it from inside the cinema room instead.

Once in a while Adam talks with a lot of respect about Bob, the senior projectionist, who has done that job for more than fifty years. Basically, he takes that responsibility like he was caring for someone very dear to him. His favourite film is “Cine Paradiso” which is probably my favourite film as well. Someone else tells me - “Bob is 70 but he looks like 50, alcohol and the movies have kept him preserved”. I give a big laugh and hope you all keep going. For us it is just a fantastic experience.

Elections

I saw for the first time Fahrenheit 9/11. I really enjoy Michael Moore’s films, although Bowling for Colombine stroke me much more than this one. The later one exposed a reality that I was just slightly aware of while many of the facts contained in Fahrenheit were already known through the European press.

What shocked most of the people, I think, was how Moore tried to expose the bad character of President Bush, and his inability to lead the destinies of the most powerful country in the world, or of any other country. In politics it is not very polite to point out personal characteristics, although in arts and humor it is, and that can explain why some people had a hard time digesting the crude message. There are some genius moments such as the reading of the “patriot act” to the congressmen, or the attempt to recruit their sons for the army. I totally support the making of more films like this.

The American elections have emptied this film a bit, and raise the motivation for a totally new film. In what way do the Americans think they have improved since the first election (where Bush actually lost)? Why is democracy so underdeveloped, giving a green light to criminal actions such as Iraq war? A dangerous lesson came with this process: in the present state, politicians from democracies are able to commit incredible crimes based on lies, and they can publicly admit it without taking any responsibility.

I suggest reading Fahrenheit 451 from Ray Bradbury, the inspiration for the title of Moore’s film.

Last week an Iraqi friend here in the UK, was asking people if she should vote for the Iraq elections. The reasons not to vote were many: many persons appear on more than one list, most of the names on the list are really not well known from the public, or just the simple statement shared by most of her (non fundamentalist) family, “there are no elections under occupation”.
My argument was that the vote was the simplest part of the democracy and in itself is a good thing, not legitimating a puppet government. If persons who do not vote by conscience are mixing themselves with those who didn’t care to vote, who preferred to stay at home because they don’t value democracy enough, then the process will have no point at all, and good opportunity of passing a message was lost. She thought of writing her motives into the paper, making a null vote, but according to the procedure null votes are spoiled, and most of null votes are from persons who don’t know how to vote properly. I say, if you don’t trust the system, or if you feel that you are not informed enough, vote blank. Blanks are counted to decide if a second turn should take place, and that is the most explicit message you can give to the whole process. Saramago stayed in the air for a moment…

A decisão do nosso Presidente merece ser qualificada com um adjectivo: "Gostei!"

Esperemos agora que a velha máxima "É preciso que tudo mude para que tudo fique como está", não venha a sair reforçada depois das próximas eleições de Fevereiro. Por muito utópico que pareça, acho que vai sendo tempo da esquerda provar que se consegue entender para criar um projecto de desenvolvimento sustentável para Portugal.

O que mais me espanta é verificar que ainda há gente que se dá ao trabalho de incomodar o Professor Cavaco Silva, pedindo-lhe que venha a governar outra vez Portugal.
Estamos lembrados do grave conflito instucional com o poeta Luís de Camões, sendo que o segundo ganha com larga vantagem em domínios com sensibilidade e, pasme-se, actualidade.

Antes de ser eleito diziam que Durão Barroso era o D. Sebastião do PSD, e o que aconteceu? A metáfora veio a revelar-se acertada, foi para a Comissão Europeia e nuuuunca mais ninguém o viu. E se, finalmente, uma maioria absolutíssima de portugueses, chegar à conclusão de o Professor Cavaco Silva afinal nunca deveria ter voltado dos confins de África, onde agora repousa, que figura mítica do passado gostariam eles de desencantar?

1. What I Am

Everyone will tell you that I am not a musician.1 It's true.
From the beginning of my career I classed myself among phonometrographers. My works are pure phonometry. If one takes the "Son of the Stars" or the "Pieces in the Form of a Pear," the "In Riding Habit"2 or the "Sarabands," one can see that no musical idea presided at the creation of these works. They are dominated by scientific thought.
Besides, I get more pleasure from measuring a sound than I do from hearing it. With phonometer in hand, I work surely and joyfully.
What haven't I weighed or measured? All of Beethoven, all of Verdi, etc. It's very curious.
The first time I used a phonoscope, I examined a B flat of average size. I have, I assure you, never seen anything more disgusting. I had to call my servant in to show it to him.
On my phono-weigher an ordinary F sharp, of a very common type, registered 93 kilograms. It came out of a very fat tenor whose weight I also took.
Do you know how to clean sounds? It's a dirty business. Cataloguing them is neater; to know how to classify them is a meticulous affair and demands good eyesight. Here, we are in phonotechnics.
In regard to sonorous explosions, often so disagreeable, cotton placed in the ears attenuates them quite comfortably. Here, we are in pyrophonics.
For writing my "Gold Pieces," I employed a caleidophone register. This took seven minutes. I had to call my servant in to listen to it.
I believe that I can say that phonology is superior to music. It is more varied. You get paid more for it. That's how I made all my money.
In any case, with a metodynamophone, a phonometry expert with practically no experience can easily note down more sounds than the most skilled musician, in the same time, with the same effort. It is thanks to it that I have been able to write so much.
The future therefore belongs to philophonics.
